Sometimes a difficult situation ends, but we still feel its effects. I use a sheet in this demonstration to show how I think about patterns of tension in the body.
Making a pattern visible
First I send a wave through a loose sheet. Then I add a restriction and send another wave through it. You can see how the movement changes. When I remove the restriction, some of that pattern remains in the fabric.
Finally, I take up the looseness and add a little traction. The movement travels through the sheet differently. I use this as an illustration of the relationship between energy and structure in Zero Balancing, rather than as a literal model of human anatomy.
Why I use this example
We can recognize something similar in our lives. A difficult colleague leaves, or we leave a job we don’t enjoy, and we expect to feel relieved. Sometimes we don’t. The situation has changed, but the experience may still feel present.
This is one way into understanding my work: paying attention to the person and the patterns they bring with them, as well as the place where they feel tension.
These videos are for education and body awareness. Bodywork does not replace medical care. Stay within a comfortable range and stop if a movement or touch hurts.
